A closer look at...

Wigan Athletic vs Grimsby Town

Wigan Athletics first ever football league game - after 34 rejections from the football league, My club Wigan Athletic where allowed to enter the hallowed '92'. In 1978 thanks to Southport FC who's ground did not meet the standards for the league, We took there place. And we have never looked back since.

During that historic season, Wigan Athletic would finish a very credible 6th place.

Here at red bricks and coal, We took a closer look at the programme from that very first game - Grimsby Town FC.

  1. "In 1978 thanks to Southport FC who's ground did not meet the standards for the league, We took there place." It was Boston United's ground that was deemed not up to standard which allowed Wigan to take their place in the end of season voting for a place in the football league. Wigan replaced Southport after a second ballot after the two clubs had initially tied.
